Previously I had a chance to head over to Frankfurt to do a day's worth of planespotting. The timing was quite important as the word goes Lufthansa, who is probably the last major airline that still operates the Airbus A340-600, is looking to retire them by the end of this month.

Not only that Lufthansa is the only European passenger 747 operator, and the airline is celebrating its centenary this year. So there is quite a lot to see on the day.

I had gone to one of the airport's official viewing points located about half way down the airport’s only North-South runway (with the other runways all being pretty much an East-West direction) at the West end of the airport, which involved walking for a very long time round the airport perimeter road.

The weather was actually very good on the day. The original forecast said it would rain on the day but fortunately that didn't happen. The winds meant for those of us at the viewpoint that day we were able to see all the departing planes that day – they either use the North-South runway and we got up close and personal during the take off roll, or use the East-West runway closest to Terminal 1 and we got a view of planes taking off against Frankfurt’s cityscape as backdrop.

Overall, it was a good day and I enjoyed it very much.
